Welcome to the Grinnell Game Development Website. We plan to make this central hub of information about the club as well as space for materials and games that the club has produced. Our main goal for the club is to demystify the process of creating games and, with a bit of hard work, anyone can create a game and make something they can be proud of! This site will contain plenty of resoruces that one can use like games created by the Grinnell community, and events that the club will host on campus.

About Us

At Grinnell, the topic of video game creation has not been explored nearly as much as it should be, leading to some not really knowing where to start. Thus, we will to create a space were anyone can come and share whatever processes, struggles, ideas and anything anyone can make. We also need you, as your participation will shape the club and what happens in weekly meetings, large events and everything inbetween.

What Does it Mean to Design Games?

When people think of game design (especially with video games), many think that you need a ton of programming experience but that isn’t true. There are many softwares that can dramaticaly reduce the amount of coding that one would need to do in. For example Unreal Engine and GameMaker Studio provide visual scripting, which doesn’t need a ton of coding. In addition, there are so many more aspects of game design beyond programming, like SFX, Music Design, Narrative, Game Feel, UI Design, Animation, etc. All of these aspects are so rich that anyone could spend years perfecting just one of them and none of them are programming the game itself. In creating a game, one will spend their time working on these aspects to make a product that consumers can enjoy and everyone working on it can feel proud of.
